Silence Is My Mother Tongue – Sulaiman Addonia (Political Fiction)
- The style of writing is enviable and the way Addonia handles gender and sexuality is incredible. There are so many intricate themes and details you can find because the imagery is so vivid. Also the characters are all very different and the dialogue is even insightful at times. – Emily
Breast and Eggs – Mieko Kawakami (Coming of (middle) age)
- The translator is award-winning, so the writing is super fluid! It’s a thought-provoking book about one unmarried woman’s journey in understanding herself and Japanese society as she intentionally tries to have a child while not having a partner. She’s also trying to make it as a writer so bonus points! The book really puts motherhood into sharp focus. – Paulette
The Prince – Machiavelli (Historical Non-fiction)
- Yes, it is fascinating, if a bit dry. The Prince gives invaluable insight into how rulers manipulate people and exercise control effectively. It’s great for becoming politically conscious and more aware of one’s freedoms and vulnerabilities as a citizen. Should be considered an exposé, not a guidebook – Logan
